If you entered last year’s KBDi Designer Awards, you’d know that – for the first time – we asked for some general information regarding the project values. It was made clear to all entrants that the judges would not receive this information, and the data collection did not form part of the judging submission or criteria in any way (and the same applies this year, too).

Our purpose for seeking out this data was to collect a small but highly curated sample of the range of budgets applicable to Australian kitchens and bathrooms, before collating the median breakdowns of these cost allocations. We thought it would be really interesting to have a concentrated look at the spends associated with quality, well-designed projects, and when we presented our findings at our ‘Here and Now’ symposium session, we discovered you were really keen to see this information, too!

This year we’ve made the data collection a compulsory part of the entry process, so we’re looking forward to having a deeper pool to draw from to establish a range of budgets applicable to well-designed kitchens and bathrooms.

We’ll be asking our broader membership (i.e. not just those entering the awards) to contribute some samples, too, and we’d really appreciate your support. (Keep an eye on your inbox – you’ll receive a request for samples in late May/early June.)

Award entrants can find a comprehensive checklist of data requirements here. For all other members, the following is an indication of the information we’ll be seeking from you soon:

For the most accurate reporting, we will be asking you to provide realistic (but approximate) figures. Where cost estimates are required, we’ll ask you to ensure that dollar amounts are represented to the nearest hundred (e.g. $517 would be rounded to $500), or to the nearest thousand if over $5,000 (e.g. $5,700 would be recorded as $6,000). All amounts should be inclusive of GST (i.e. the end cost to the client).

We also want to assure all Members that we’re collecting this data purely for the purposes of industry surveying, marketing and education. Any information presented or published will be strictly anonymous and general in nature – we’ll never publish your names alongside the budget recordings.

When will you see the results?

We’ll be presenting our findings at a dedicated Symposium session in Melbourne this year. (Registration will be open soon! We’ll let you know when you’re good to go.) We’re sure this snapshot will be great fodder for eager designers, and a useful resource when talking budgets with your clients.
