Essential Webinar for Independent Contractors and Freelancers

Dec 13, 2023 | Business, Industry News, Video Conferences

If you’re an independent contractor, freelancer or self-employed individual, your right to choose to work for yourself is under threat.

Over one million self-employed Australians work as independent contractors; we know many of our members (and the tradies you work with) fit this bill.

The Albanese Government believes that if you’re not a permanent employee, you are in insecure work, and they’re taking action to remove this right of self-autonomy.

New laws are being debated in parliament (with some amendments already sneaking through), and action is essential. ‘Same Job, Same Pay’ or  the ‘Closing Loopholes Bill’ will make it harder or impossible for businesses to engage independent contractors. Worse still, independent contractors could lose their business and be treated as employees.

Master Builders has been actively investigating these IR amendments. They’re joining KBDi for a critical webinar to explain what the changes could mean for you.

We encourage you to share this webinar with your associated trades and subcontractors. All will be welcome to attend.

Key issues for discussion:

  • Labour hire changes that passed last week undermine a range of legitimate arrangements in our industry, including the use of labour hire and specialist service subcontractors.
  • Subcontractors like tilers, sparkies, painters and plumbers are now in the firing line.
  • Smaller subcontractors in the residential sector will be hit hard.
The legislation may lead to more disputes, higher costs, lower productivity, and fewer small residential builders.

Still before the Senate:

  • Big changes to casual workers
  • Changes to independent contractors – some will be forced to become employees
  • New ’employee-like’ category of employment impacting independent contractors
  • More rights for unions and changes to entry powers
  • New fines and penalties for employers
Why Your Participation Matters
This webinar aims to provide crucial insights into the recent changes and their potential impact on the industry. Your understanding and support are vital in advocating for the concerns of the building and construction community.

If this bill is passed it will crush small business working with independant contractors.
