When specifying gas cooktops and designing a space to accommodate them, it’s important to make yourself aware of the relevant rules and regulations. Most of these requirements sit within the Australian Standard AS/NZS 5601.1 – Gas installations (Part 1: General installations). This Standard has recently been modified and is now available in a 2022 version.
The update includes an increased clearance requirement between domestic cooking appliances and rangehoods. This increase (from 600 mm to 650 mm minimum clearance) aligns the Standard with the IEC 60335-2-31, Household and similar electrical appliances–Safety, Part 2-31: Particular requirements for rangehoods and other cooking fume extractors.
The change also aligns the clearance requirement with the dimension nominated by many appliance manufacturers.
We’ve outlined the new requirements, along with regulations associated with splashback materials etc., in an all-new Technical Bulletin. Members can access this Bulletin in their exclusive Member Portal today.
